Something’s Brewing at the Iconfactory

July 24th, 2006 at 9:38pm • Posted in GUI Customization • Tagged GUI Customization

Something’s brewing at the Iconfactory, and for now, they’ve posted a very amusing clue at what’s coming up. The Iconfactory, of course, is probably the most established icon design group out there, with such projects as the Windows XP system icons under their belt. Gedeon promises a new pixelart movie each day until the big unveil (five days left according to the splash), so this’ll be quite a fun ride. (Seriously, it’s cool stuff. ;) ) Enjoy!

Iconfactory Preview

Could it be coincidence that Iconfactory artist David Lanham has just released a teaser to an upcoming theme and iconset to be released in 7 days? Or is there more?!

It looks pretty obvious to me that it is simply a redesign of their site, in particular, one that plans on using webstandards.

1. The teaser is taking up the main domain, something that can distract users while their entire backend is re-done. Maybe preventing users from seeing all the junk while they clean out and update their server to the new site.

2. The guy from the W3C is obviously going around the “factory” giving and inspection and is pointing out all the flaws, i.e., font tags, etc…

Looking forward to the new design, I liked their old one, but I am sure with the talent there they will pull off something really nice.

Psst Phill! Any chance of results for the fake screen contest showing up today? Sorry, that was offtopic. So back to topic: that animation was awesome. I’ve always loved the Iconfactory animations on their news page.

I’m especially pleased to see a clue that Stuffit will finally be eliminated from the Iconfactory forever. God I hate Stuffit. Give me a nice zip any day.

Oh and I really hope that wasn’t David Lanham that was so kind as to expose his lower extremities to the W3C man. :P

Since Joshua put it together, that does make pretty much good sense. A new layout perhaps?

Well Joshua, looks like you nailed the first video. Out of at least 5 more planned. ;)

Loved that animation.

I agree, I think Joshua has hit the proverbial nail on the head there.
I never really paid attention to how their site was made before but the “.ASP ??” bubble would suggest (if we go along with the idea of a site redesign) that they have totally rebuilt the backend aswell; maybe using something hip and cool like RoR or PHP?!

If they were trying to make it at all vague, they should have left off the W3C on the truck. With that logo on there, they didn’t even need the rest of the animation. Still, very cute & clever way to announce an upcoming redevelopment. Hurrah for standards!

A new one is up! Lots of construction going on at the factory. Looks like it’s a full remodel! This would suggest a very drastic change in the website, no doubt a new design (instead of just cleaned up markup or something) and probably a brand spankin’ new backend like Jon said too!

I think it’s a creative way of showing what’s to come. Usually people just put a under construction page up and that would be the end of it. From a designer stand point it gets me hyped up for what’s to come.

Joshua: The site redesign has been an ongoing project for the past three years — there’s no way we could do it in one week.

Jon & Frederson: View source.

Anyone looked at the source? e.g.

Looks like the new site is going to be based on Ruby On Rails!
