Tangerine: Juicy On The Inside

TangerineMy friends at the Potion Factory have been cooking something up for a while, and they're finally ready to give everyone a taste of their juicy creation. It's called Tangerine, and depending on how you look at it, it can be used for creating upbeat, active playlists of songs from your collection for working out with (or just pumping you up for that test coming up), or slow, soothing playlists for relaxing with. How does it do this? Boot up Tangerine and you'll be welcomed with a little rotating slice of tangerine as the app analyzes your music collection and assigns each track a "BPM", or "beats per minute" figure, along with values for "beat intensity".

Oh, and did I mention this? Tangerine is one juicy app. It looks great, and feels even better. (And the screenshot below doesn't really do it justice if you have more album art than I do.) Like every other Potion Factory app, this one's a beauty, and really fun to play with even if it's not something you're looking for. It's worth checking out if only for experiencing the refreshing UI and rediscovering your music collection.

Excuse the lack of pretty album art in my collection... but regardless, Tangerine is gorgeous!

The juicy, square Tangerine icon beckons... (And by the way, where can I get me some of those crazy Korean square tangerines?) Check out the blog post and download the Tangerine beta here.

Tangerine looks awesome. I just downloaded it a few hours ago, but I haven't installed it yet.

Nice.

By the way, what happened to InnerTube from Steve Streza?

Funny, but this is exactly the idea I submitted for the MyDreamApp competition… I thought they didn’t take it because they thought the market appeal wasn’t good enough, but it turns out they must have known that Tangerine was being developed?

By the way: I found another app that does exactly the same a couple of weeks ago. It is called beaTunes (http://www.beatunes.com) and runs on Mac and Windows machines as it is written in Java and it is tightly integrated with iTunes. It analyzes the BPM impressingly well and gives each song a colour representation in addition for smart playlists with songs that match. Check it out.

Well, I have to say Tangerine looks a little better than beaTunes...

why would someone use this? (not to be pessimistic, but I don't see how it could be useful for non-DJ or Musiclover type people)

I've been looking for something that would automatically set my BPM like forever!
This should be awesome

@ Dannny Cohen,
This app is perfect for, my, Nike+ Running.

Making playlists depending on how long you want to be running for gets old really quickly. Add the fact that there is always some sort of tempo you want to keep up with during your run, it wasn't too fun sifting through iTunes looking for songs that are of that tempo. What I always found is that I kept running to the same songs all the time.

Enter Tangerine.
