Preorder Tubular (Fomerly InnerTube)

November 07th, 2006 at 2:06pm • Posted in Mac Apps • Tagged , , ,

TuularA little over two months ago, I previewed an upcoming YouTube client by my friend Steve Streza. The app is still upcoming, but it's a lot closer to release, and taking a cue from some mutual friends, Steve is taking preorders for his app, now renamed Tubular. (CBS threatened suit for InnerTube.)

Before you kill him about the presale, it's worth noting that in this case, you guys actually do know what you're digging into your wallets for. Plus, Steve is hoping he can continue development on a bit more robust of a development platform than his aging G4 iBook. ;)

While the name has changed, Tubular is still very much the app it was promised to be. It features extremely slick YouTube video browsing (couchpotatos will love keyboard navigation), easy video organization by drag and drop, and one click video conversion for playback of your favorite videos on your iPod.

Tubular Shot

As always with presales, it's a bit of a risk to purchase the app before it's released. But there are, of course, some perks. The price on the blog for interested people is $12.99. (I've been told it'll sell for $19.99 when 1.0 is released.) But hardcore YouTubing blog readers can grab this for $9.99 by clicking here. Enjoy! (Digg it!

Whoops. mpm, hold off for a couple hours until Steve's back from his exams. I'll update the post as soon as he fixes it up.

Sorry guys! I guess this coupon system has a few kinks in it. I'm working them out, and I'll post again when its working again.

However, some people have been able to get the coupon code to work, so give it a shot.

great app, but the price is too high. $20 to simply view youtube in a different interface.

at least it has worth [unlike some apps *cough*]. but ill wait until someone actually has used it before or have a trial download :)

It sounds nice, and looks nice, but paying for software that you haven't tried, and that isn't even finished yet is still ridiculous.

You know what's ridiculous Joe? The fact that I was just seriously contemplating buying a Nintendo Wii preorder ticket (ticket, not even the system itself) for something like 300 bucks. ;)

$9.99 isn't bad considering the current cycle of:

1. find something on YouTube
2. download and convert it with PodTube (which requires Safari open and has a little box that stays open (and takes forever).

Or buy a limited TubeSock for $15.

The only suggestion I have is if there's a development build circulating among friends, why not allow early purchasers (ie customers from this blog) to download an early beta? An early beta with Sparkle updates (+ crash reporter) to help with development.

http://www.fadingred.org/blog/articles/2006/08/22/crash-reporter

Also with an interface like the screenshot, I'd love to see support for other services like DailyMotion, MySpaceVideos, etc. Just adding support for those porn versions will probably multiply your customer base.

It could be the DemocracyPlayer (which is open source by the way) of video-sharing sites.

Er, um... Nintendo has proven itself over and over in the past. This isn't quite the same. =P

Hmm... sorry for being so visually oriented, but the icon for this app seems quite a bit inspired by this one: http://www.macthemesforums.net/viewtopic.php?t=16777946

Not that I really have a point, but the icon itself seems a bit uninspired =/.

Talking about the app itself, it's a nice alternative, but not one I personally find worth $20. Or $10. Maybe $5. But then I'm just on opinion among many =D

you should all be shot...im not a fan of youtube, so ill never buy this app, but...i can still appreciate a guy trying to make a buck by trying to make life a little easier for people that are into youtube, and im sure there are lots of them out there...

i mean, who knows how long this guy has worked on this app? not me? 100+ hours? and then to hear people say its not worth $10?? come on? are you serious? what is this? mexico? what if your boss came to you and said that your lazy ass wasnt worth the last hour of work you just did? and decided not to pay you? or said it was only worth $5?

sorry if this post is a bit harsh, but come on....this dood is just trying to make a living like the rest of us, and if he can make your life better, or easier....which this interface looks a hell of a lot better to use than youtubes...and especially if you are a youtube user....

i keep waiting for humanity to grow up....and its posts like these that make me realize we are a long ways off....we should be supporting each other with love, and kind comments, not comments like...."your shit is only worth $5 of my money"...

gimme a break....i feel sorry for the poor developer that has to read trash like that about the work he has slaved over....you guys need to think before you speak, you are the ones who deserve bad comments....

In a way I agree with Travis. I came to this site from reading the story on Digg. I'm a semi moderate Youtube viewer and an application like this would make things a little smoother.

My point is, if you think the price is to high or you don't think you'd need this application, then close the page & move on.

I can't imagine you'd walk in to a Walmart or Sears or any other store and stand there at the register complaining about how a product is built, it's price or what it's designed for so why do it here?

Travis.....I wish there were more people thinking like you. Thumbs up for hard working developers and people like Travis. I'm not real good with computers and need all the help I can get from "easy to use app's."

Ernest Liu (Pixel Sage)

Travis, it is fine that you see the hard work one guy put into creating an application, and I am not trying to dispute that. Tubular will definitely be of use to many people, but I just don't fall in that crowd.

Spending hundreds of hours on an app doesn't justify that a developer should be paid a lot for it. If I tried for hundreds of hours to develop some app that turned out rather useless, would you be paying for it? Even if I put my heart and soul into it? Even if I slaved over it? There are plenty of developers who have been doing that but haven't made much! I doubt you'd feel sorry for them and go around buying all the shareware available on the internet.

If you'd really like to see "humanity grow up", you're witnessing it. If people don't pay for something a developer worked on for hundreds of hours, the that would be a sign to the developer to start something new. If everyone felt sorry and paid the money to "help" him, then he'd be inclined to continue on something that no one would care about. This probably isn't the case, but hopefully you catch my drift.

If you really feel sorry for him, them don't take Phill's coupon and go pay the full $20. What's more, pay $40, just to take my place too.

Thanks to everyone for your comments. To address the concerns of those who don't think they'll use Tubular, I ask that you hold your concern until it's available for download. I've done a lot behind the scenes work to make Tubular very useful and those kind of things are impossible to demonstrate with a screenshot or a preview video.

Keyboard navigation? Let's get lazier: remote control navigation. :P

But first, I guess you'll have to get MacBook/Pro/iMac/mini, soon. I can beta test. ;)

Can't wait Steve! I've recently been getting into YouTube a bit more. Even though at this point I'm not convinced to buy it, I'm certainly going to try it. Who knows? I may get it for full price in the end after giving it a test run =D

You'll notice at the top of that thread that Jonas says "Here is the old style TV icon I made the other day while chatting to Ice Spectre.... let's just say I got inspired by his work ethics!" He actually made his icon after me showing him a work-in-progress shot of the Tubular icon...

James, no. No, I won't just go back to doing whatever you prefer.

James

November 09th, 2006 at 3:39pm

It was actual content though small articles and such, now this is just like reading Versiontracker from next week. The app makeover articles were genuinely interesting and useful, this sort of stuff however I can find out about anywhere.

Phill Ryu

November 09th, 2006 at 3:41pm

James, I try to write original content, and if not, get the scoop. Tubular presale news was posted here first, no question about that.

Looks like a great app. As to some of the negativity above $9.99 is a bargain for this app. I don't even have the time to use YouTube that often but when I do this will be a great time saver. Good work, I look forward to using this.

Chezpaul

haha.. this is something new.. pay for a pre release and without even trying it out... Nice...

I'm sure it's the kind of app that you try and then go back to the good old browser for your Youtube itch...

How long will Youtube last for anyway now that google has it ?
