So Who’s Upgrading?

October 26th, 2007 at 8:54am • Posted in Apple • Tagged Apple

So today’s the big day, and finally, Cupertino has let the cat out of the bag. The cat I’m referring to, of course, is the latest revision of Mac OS X: Leopard.

I’ll be picking up my copy this afternoon. It feels a little bit like Christmas, except unlike Santa Claus, I still believe in Steve Jobs and his software design team. In particular, I’ve been pretty impressed with Leopard’s outer space stylings.

Not looking forward to backing up over a terrabyte of stuff, but it’ll be worth it. Nothing quite like running on a clean install of the latest and greatest.

Anyone running Leopard already? And if so, what’s your favorite new feature in it so far?

I’m sitting in my house waiting for Leopard to come in the next half hour. I’ so excited my hands are shaking…

I’m upgrading for sure! My copy is in the delivery truck on the way to my house as I type this. :D

My copy is somewhere over the Pacific ocean right now in a FedEx cargo plane. I have already backed everything up, have all my apps ready to reinstall, and a new drive for Time Machine. I’m pretty stoked.

I’ll think I’ll wait until I get a new Mac, the imac I use now is getting old and slow. And it hardly has any hard disk space left…

Or, I COULD try and persuade my parents into letting me get Leopard at MacLiveExpo tomorrow…

Installed Leopard a couple of hours ago and Spaces is proving to be a really great new feature. Its the small things I am enjoying a lot though, the new menu bar, rounded drop down boxes, etc.

Spotlight is blazingly fast too, finally what we all wished it was from Tiger.

I’ll definitely be down at my local Apple Store (La Cantera) this afternoon. Can’t wait to try out the new Finder and Desktop features.

Happy Leopard Day, everyone!

How has Spaces been working into your workflow Sam? I currently tend to juggle exposé, command-tabbing, and command-tildaing, plus I\’m still getting used to the screen real estate of a recent upgrade to a 20\” display, so Spaces is probably a little bit over the top for me. But hey, who knows. I guess it\’ll be nice having another window management / productivity trick in the bag.

I would be, only Amazon UK decided today that the Leopard family pack I pre-ordered is actually going to be released on the 31st, rather than today like it said when I originally ordered.

I’m upgrading as soon as I have my copy!
I’m just a little disappointed that the wireless back-up feature isn’t included yet ; hoping the software update will deliver that soon…

I have it installed on a Mac Mini in my living room. A couple items I am loving is the AutoFS networking fixes. Also, take note of the icon being used for networked samba shares. It is an old CRT with the BSOD. Priceless!

I am also loving the new Front Row and the fact that it can now play VIDEOTS folders without any hacks.

I’ve been running Leopard for about 4 hours now and I love the speed of it on my previous generation iMac (3 GB of RAM doesn’t hurt). I am very upset that Apple pulled support for Airport attached drives from Time Machine. This worked before the GM. Now I had to pull that 500 GB drive off and attach it locally.

And Spaces rules! I love not having to move about windows when I’m working in Xcode.

Phill, you think Spaces is over the top on your 20″. I have a 24″ iMac and I still use spaces, so much room leftover in each space :) .

@Phill Ryu – “How has Spaces been working into your workflow Sam? I currently tend to juggle exposé, command-tabbing, and command-tildaing”

I was the same, but now it really is easy to just jump from Space 1 to Space 2 and keep working, or from Space 2 to Space 3 without having to do CMD+Tab Tab Tab Tab to get to the right App. I guess you have to try it to see if you like it, but so far it seems like a great productivity tool.

I’ve tried Leopard Server and I really like the new calendar and wiki server. Also (as a Rails Developer) I really like the Ruby integration.

From the desktop features I think my favorite one is the Spaces thing, since I was used to it when I switched from Ubuntu to Mac OS and I missed.

Great, now that Leopard’s here you’ve got no excuses for not updating the MDA site. At a minimum, if you just want the whole thing to die and go away, you still need to say something.

So…. will you post an update?

Phill Ryu

October 29th, 2007 at 12:21pm

I’ve been wary of posting MDA news, because I don’t want to make any promises I can’t keep, or announce things too early. However, I suppose things are solidifying back up again, and enough so I feel comfortable promising you guys an update soon. It’s going to be a bittersweet announcement, but with the good outweighing the bad two to one. Haven’t decided what order that’ll go in yet.

And, you know, in the futures, if you’re curious about the status on a project, the best place to ask is usually on AIM. Might not have time for a full conversation, but questions like that I can answer there. Nice try with the Leopard name dropping, but it’s definitely still off topic. :P

No, it is not off-topic. We were told that because of Leopard NDAs, little could be said about some of the MDA projects. You don’t have to go into details on the MDA site, but a little communication sure would keep you form the backlash you are getting there now. Soon is a term you may wish to define to those you say it to.

Phill Ryu

October 29th, 2007 at 6:25pm

Joe, you’re right. And regarding when the announcement will be made, come by and visit the site next Monday.

Phill Ryu

October 29th, 2007 at 6:26pm

And for the record, Sam, Spaces is indeed growing on me. Wish it supported separate desktops to visually differentiate desktops, though.

October 30th, 2007 at 10:57am

Thanks for the answer Phill! I need to get you added to AIM…

Oh, and I vote for bad news first. We can take it – though you will have to be prepared for the rash of abuse that’s almost guaranteed to come. Having something positive to follow it up is probably a good strategy anyway.

Yay – I finally got it!

I like Spaces too, although I keep forgetting that it’s there :P

When are you going to update the site? It’s been a while since you last updated it.
